Chiropractic is an alternative and complementary medicine that concentrates on the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of various mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system of the body and the effects of these disorders on the bodies nervous system and other general health. It uses forms of manual therapy such as spinal adjustment and other soft tissue manipulation to treat the patient. It is based on the belief that vertebral subluxation or spinal joint dysfunction of the back can interfere with the nerves.

There is no need to see your GP or to get a referral letter from your GP before arranging an appointment with a chiropractor. Treatments usually range from £30-75 per session, although it could be more or less than this. You can telephone the chiropractic practice and ask for their treatment costs.

If you contact a chiropractor yourself for private treatment, you should make sure they are registered with the General Chiropractic Council. By law, all chiropractors must be registered with the GCC. Chiropractors who are registered with the GCC will have undergone the required training and will be fully insured to practise.
