Local ‘Bevin Boys’ from around North West Leicestershire are to be honoured by local MP David Taylor who will be formally presenting them with their badges.
The event is to be held at 2.30pm on Friday, 30 May at Snibston Discovery Park, Ashby Road, Coalville. Invitations have been sent to all known local recipients. Any Bevin Boy who has not received one is asked to contact David’s office as soon as possible.
David said “My late father-in-law was amongst the 48,000 sent down the mines.
“This Badge formally recognizes the contribution made by the Bevin Boys who worked in the UK coalfields during and immediately after World War Two. It has been made available to surviving Bevin Boys including both volunteers and those who were selected to work down the mines. Surviving Bevin Boys can now wear it in public to visibly raise awareness of the important role they played during World War Two and in the post-war reconstruction of the UK.”
Further Information
The Bevin Boys badge has been issued to:
• Men who were conscripted directly into the mines
• Those who opted for mine work in preference to joining the Armed Forces
• Those who were in the Armed Forces and volunteered to become miners during the period 1943-1948.
The Bevin Boys scheme was introduced in 1943 by the then Minister for Labour and National Service, Ernest Bevin. The scheme ran between 1943 and 1948 and involved recruiting men to work in coal mines during and immediately following World War II.
Introducing the scheme just before he stood down as Prime Minister, Tony Blair spoke of “the tremendous work done and the sense of gratitude the country owes to the Bevin Boys” while Energy Minister Lord Truscott said: "These men played a key role in keeping a vital industry going during World War Two and it is with honour and gratitude that we recognize their important contribution with this lapel Badge.”
The Bevin Boys Association has been closely involved in the design of the badge to ensure that it suitably reflects the work they carried out.
