Local Land Army Girls from around North West Leicestershire are to be ‘given the public recognition they deserve’ by local MP David Taylor who will be formally presenting them with their veterans’ badges.
The event is to be held at 2.30pm on Tuesday, 12 August at Cattows Farm, heather (Heather Pick Your Own). Invitations have been sent to all known local recipients. Any former Land Army Girl who has been awarded a badge but not received an invitation to this event and would like to attend is asked to contact David’s office as soon as possible on 01530 814372.
David said “I’m delighted that the Government has acknowledged the contribution made by the Women’s Land Army and the Women’s Timber Corps by means of a veterans badge.
“This recognises the important role these women played, not only in feeding the nation, but also in providing timber for vital industries, such as mining and aircraft manufacture. It is important that we never forget the sacrifices that were made both at home and abroad during the war. The badge is a fitting commemoration of their work in supporting the war effort.”
Background Information
Known local recipients come from Coalville, Whitwick, Thringstone, Ibstock, Ravenstone, Ashby de la Zouch, Measham, Donisthorpe and Moira.
Originally formed during World War I, the Women’s Land Army, colloquially known as the Land Girls, was re-formed shortly after the outbreak of World War II to work on the land, so releasing male workers to go to war. By 1943 there were 80,000 women working in every aspect of agriculture, and also in the timber industry. The work was often physically demanding and for long hours. With their uniform of green ties and jumpers and brown felt slouch hats, they worked from dawn to dusk each day, milking cows, digging ditches, sowing seeds and harvesting crops.
The Women’s Timber Corps (WTC), also known as the ‘Lumber Jills’ worked tirelessly in the forests to provide timber for the war effort, felling trees, sawing timber and sharpening saws.
The WLA remained in existence until 1950, when it was disbanded. Members were granted a certificate signed by HM Queen Elizabeth in recognition of their service. Over the last 60 years, the women have campaigned strenuously for more formal recognition of their efforts.
The new badge has been specially designed by the Garter King at Arms and bears the Royal Crown. It shows a gold wheat sheaf on a white background surrounded by a circlet of pine branches and pine cones to indicate the work of both the Land Army and the Timber Corps.
