A woman from North West Leicestershire has been presented with an award in recognition of the 22 years of voluntary work she has dedicated to local policing and the community.
48 year old Pauline Pettitt, from Heather, is being presented with a Force APEX Award by the Chief Constable, Matt Baggott today (August 29th 2008). Pauline became involved in Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) in 1986 which marked the beginning of her 22 year contribution to local policing and the community. She became a Special Police Constable in 1995 but had to resign two years later through ill health. Following her resignation she dedicated more of her time to NHW and set up a Neighbourhood Watch office at Coalville Police station in 2001. Under her guidance and enthusiasm there are now 260 NHW schemes across North West Leicestershire with 6000 members.
On top of that, Pauline became a police volunteer in March 2002 and ensured that the team of 16 volunteers were actively involved in all crime reduction and neighbourhood policing initiatives across North West Leicestershire. She has attended hundreds of community events over the years including Ashby Show and Sence Valley Forest Park Open Days, and in 2006 and 2007 she contributed more than 550 voluntary hours each year to the police.
In 2003 she won the NHW Personality of the Year Award and in 2005 won the Woman of Determination category at the Leicestershire Women of Achievement Awards and was the only women to be nominated in two categories.
In her spare time Pauline has been a member of the Heather PTA, a volunteer at Sence Valley Forest Park and helped to organise the Heather Scarecrow Festival.
Pauline said; "Because of my illness I had to give up work so I decided the best thing I could do was commit my time to voluntary work and the Police Force. I wanted to do something that meant I had to use my brain and I met and made some amazing friends. I have loved being part of the police family and because I was a Special Constable I had gained a lot of knowledge about policing. The police have kept me going at times.
"Because of my police knowledge they asked me to set up a neighbourhood watch office at the police station which has seen the number of members grow over the years. Unfortunately my health has got to the stage where the Doctors I see, have told me that it's time I looked after myself so I'm retiring after 22 years and hope that new people will come in with fresh ideas.
"I am sad to be leaving, but I have made some great friends and had a wonderful leaving do back in early August, where I was presented with a number of presents including a beautiful engraved cut glass vase. I will still be busy helping my two sons, Alistair and Nicholas, whenever I can. I am still a volunteer with the Sence Valley Forest Park so I will always have plenty to do, like when they sell Christmas trees leading up to Christmas."
Inspector Chris Brown, the Commander of North West Leicestershire Local Policing Unit, said; "Pauline has made an invaluable contribution to local policing and has put her heart and soul into working for the community over such a long period of time. I wish her well for the future and believe her award recognises her truly outstanding contribution to the communities of North West Leicestershire and neighbourhood policing."
