Plans designed to reduce accidents at a major Coalville junction have been unveiled for people to give their views.
The safety improvements are proposed for the busy A511 Stephenson Way/ Broom Leys Road junction to help reduce road casualties.
Investigations have found that over a three year period, 8 out of the 10 recorded personal injury accidents at the junction involved vehicles turning right.
The proposals include introducing separate right turn signals, pedestrian and cycle crossings and some restrictions on conflicting traffic movements.
Letters have been delivered to nearby households and local groups asking for opinions and people have until December 12 to have a say.
Subject to the feedback received, work could start by spring next year.
Nicholas Rushton, Deputy Leader of the County Council, said: “The proposed improvements aim to make the junction safer and benefit vulnerable road users such as pupils walking and cycling to the nearby Broom Leys School.”
More information on the scheme is available by calling 0116 305 7226 or by visiting the consultation section of our website
Notes for Editors:
The scheme includes:
• Controlled crossing facilities for pedestrians and cyclists
• Separately signalled right turn movements from Broom Leys Road (Coalville District Hospital side) onto Stephenson Way
• Separately signalled right turn movements from Stephenson Way travelling from the Bardon Road roundabout onto Broom Leys Road towards the Coalville District Hospital
• Prohibited right turn manoeuvres from Stephenson Way (Stephensons College side)
• Prohibited right turn manoeuvres from Broom Leys Road (Coalville town side)
• Prohibited left turn manoeuvres from Stephenson Way (Bardon roundabout side) into Broom Leys Road
The Traffic Regulation Order required to prohibit the turning movements will be advertised in the Coalville Times today (Thursday November 20), with notices on site from this date for a period of three weeks.
