24 November 2008 Focus on loan sharks at Coalville meeting

People in Coalville can pick up information next week on how to avoid loan sharks.

At Coalville Community Forum, residents can hear from the Midlands Public Protection scheme about what help is available and what is being done to tackle loan sharks.

People can learn about the latest plans for new houses and employment in the area and find out how they can have a say at the meeting next Monday (1st December).

The forum is also a chance for residents to hear the latest roads update and use voting handsets to help influence spending on top priorities.

Community forums are a great opportunity for people to learn about bigger issues affecting the area, get answers to queries and influence local decision-making.

Anyone with a query about a local issue can also go along and and put it to officers from a range of agencies in a 'Question Time' session.

Tony Gillard, Chair of the Forum, said: "Loan sharks prey on people when they are most in need and we want to make sure everyone is aware of the pitfalls of borrowing money this way and that there are other options out there. With the economic downturn, more and more people will be coming into contact with loan sharks who will exploit their situation.

"The forum, as always, will also be a chance for residents of Coalville to find out what is happening in their town and how it affects them. I’d like to invite all local residents to attend the meeting where they will also have a chance to put their questions to us."

The meeting will be at 6.30pm on Monday, 1st December in the main hall at Castle Rock High School, Meadow Lane, Coalville, LE67 4BR and is open to people living in Coalville, Greenhill, Snibston, Ravenstone, Whitwick, Hugglescote, Charley and Bardon.

For more information about this forum please contact Kristy Ball on 0116 305 8099 or go to www.leicestershireforums.org

Notes:

Community Forums are part of a new county-wide initiative involving Leicestershire County Council, District and Borough Councils, NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland, Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Together partners.

There are 27 forums across Leicestershire which bring together elected representatives across all tiers of local government - County, District and Borough and Parish, together with a range of other community representatives.

Although they do not have formal decision-making powers, forums are important bodies of influence - there is a 'duty to respond' to actions recommended.
