2 December 2008 Snibston recognised as a centre for regional learning

Leicestershire County Council’s Snibston Discovery Museum has now been officially recognised as a ‘Satellite Centre’ for the Science Learning Centre East Midlands.

Science Learning Centres are part of a national programme to provide high quality professional development and training for primary and secondary science teachers. The aim of the Centres is to promote more effective teaching of science in order to give pupils the knowledge and understanding they need - both as scientists and citizens of the future.

As part of this initiative Snibston will be hosting four courses in 2009, including a new and exciting workshop where delegates immerse themselves in the world of an expert witness to uncover the cause of the infamous Whitwick Colliery Disaster. Using hands-on science, role play, historical evidence and original artefacts teachers will investigate the science behind the disaster to bring science and living conditions in Victorian Britain (Coalville) to life.

The Whitwick Colliery Disaster Course has been developed through a partnership between the Learning Team at Snibston and staff from the Faculty of Science at Loughborough University.

Mr Ernie White, lead member for Leicestershire County Council’s Community Services said ‘This is a really innovative use of Snibston and it’s also a fantastic opportunity to forge new partnerships that help develop today’s science teachers to inspire our young scientists of tomorrow’.
