Police urge shed security in North West Leicestershire

Now that the snow has gone and the daffodils are starting to appear, many people will be thinking about getting their gardens ready for the spring/summer season.

However, as shed security may not be the first thing to cross your mind, North West Leicestershire Constabulary and Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) are issuing yellow plastic signs which act as a prompt for people to improve the security of their sheds and deter thieves.

The signs, with the NHW logo and the words ‘This shed is alarmed" are distributed locally in a variety of ways.  These include crime reduction and beat consultation events held by the police and also from the front enquiry offices at North West Leicestershire police stations.

Local residents may wish to consider purchasing a low cost shed alarm for their garden shed, garage or outbuilding. They may be interested to know that the NHW office sells shed alarms for only £12, which includes a set of batteries.

Security measures for garden sheds, garages and outbuildings are an essential part of a home and garden maintenance routine, especially as their contents are likely to include the following items: lawnmowers, power tools, garden equipment, bicycles, sports equipment and similar items.

Steve Hastings, Community Initiative Co-ordinator for North West Leicestershire Constabulary, said: "Many people simply do not think to adequately secure their garden shed garage or outbuilding. Most burglary offences are committed by opportunistic criminals, so it is very important to deny criminals the chance to steal from you".

"The contents of garden sheds, garages and outbuildings are very attractive to thieves because they are easy to sell, to get money easily. In addition, some items, e.g. ladders and tools, provide the criminal with the means to break into your home, so that is another good reason for effective and adequate security. I would also advise people to check their household contents insurance to make sure that garden sheds, garages and outbuildings have sufficient cover".

"Often garages and sheds are left unlocked or without any appropriate security, such as padlocks, chains or lighting. By following simple precautions you can make your property more secure, and deter thieves."

For more information on the shed signs please contact Steve Hastings at Coalville local policing unit (LPU) on Leicester (0116) 222 2222 ext 3043 or the NHW office on extension 3079.

If you see anyone acting suspiciously and you think they are still in the area, contact the police by dialling 999. If they are no longer in the area, report the incident on Leicester (0116) 222 2222 or Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous, on 0800 555 111.
