Adult Social Care Service
A carer who has helped people with learning disabilities for more than 25 years is visiting Buckingham Palace this week to collect an MBE.
Lynda Toon from Whitwick near Coalville, provides short breaks in her own home and has helped over 70 adults as well as supporting three people who live with her family long-term.
Most of these placements were for adults with learning disabilities but Lynda has also helped people with multiple disabilities, mental ill-health or alcohol dependence.
This support provides family and friends with a break from caring and has enabled many people to develop and maintain living skills, become involved in community life, activities and events and gain confidence to live independently.
Lynda, who is awarded her MBE on Thursday (12th March), also used to run a youth club from her own home and has been involved with luncheon clubs for older people, a 'mother and tots' group as well as voluntary work.
Lynda said: "I am honoured to be awarded for something I thoroughly enjoy doing."
David Sprason, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, said: "Lynda is an exceptionally hard-working and dedicated carer who always puts other people first before her own needs.
"We are proud to have someone like Lynda working for the Adult Placement Service and pleased that she has been given the recognition that her work so richly deserves by being awarded an MBE.”
The County Council's Adult Placement Service provides a variety of care and support options for adults with learning disabilities, mental ill-health and physical impairment and older people. This can include day-time support, overnight short breaks and long-term accommodation to enable carers, relatives and friends to have a rest from caring.
Becoming an adult placement carer may be of interest to anyone with experience in caring for or supporting adults with disabilities. Carers need to be willing to share their home and family life for a few hours, couple of days or a few weeks, have a bedroom to spare and are paid for the support they provide.
Anyone wanting more information should contact the Adult Placement Service on 0116 260 4660 or complete an enquiry form at: www.leics.gov.uk/adult_placement_service/can_you_care
