A pioneering Leicestershire website run by young people has won a national award.
Leicestershire County Council’s Jitty website has been honoured by Children and Young People Now magazine, for its work to engage young people.
The Jitty is run by around 50 young people, supported by two youth workers and three volunteers, who produce articles, art and photography for the site.
The site and its forums receive 200,000 visits per month. Features include:
• Information on serious issues affecting young people, such as bullying and domestic violence
• Interviews with famous musicians, actors and sports stars, including La Roux, James Morrison, Ian McDiarmid and Sir Chris Hoy
• Reviews of games, music and film
• Close working with the county’s youth council, CYCLe
Abbie Granger, 16, from Coalville, has been involved with the Jitty for three years.
She said: “This award is a real reflection on the Jitty and everyone involved.
“I have reviewed books and films and interviewed Sir Chris Hoy and the band Vagabond. I’ve made some good friends, I’ve gained great experiences, and I’ve gained confidence – not everyone gets to interview famous people. I’d encourage other young people to get involved.”
Ivan Ould, Cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The Jitty is a brilliant success, because it is run by young people, for young people. I’d encourage young people across the county to find out more and get involved.”
For further details, see www.thejitty.com – a full list of interviews is available on www.thejitty.com/articles/-/tags/interview . Anyone interested in contributing to the Jitty can contact James Hunter on 0116 305 6391.
