Police are appealing for witnesses following the report of a distraction burglary in Hugglsecote, Coalville.

The incident happened at around 2pm on Tuesday August 4, when the 77-year-old victim was approached by a man at her home who claimed to be from the water board.

The man entered the victims house and asked for the water valves to be turned off. After looking at the taps in the bathroom and kitchen the man left.

The victim became suspicious after the man had left and checked with her water company to see if he was a genuine caller. After finding out that he was not she called the police.

She also discovered cash had been taken form her bedroom.

The man is described as white, around 18 to 20-years-old, about 57 tall and of a slim build. He was clean shaven and wore dark trousers and a jacket.

PC Paul Hicks, the officer investigating the incident said: We are appealing to anyone who may have information about this burglary to come forward.

You might have been in the area on Tuesday at around 2pm and can remember seeing a man matching the description. Maybe you have been approached by him yourself. If so then please call.

We would like to remind the public how important it is not to let strangers into your home. If you feel wary of the caller try and arrange another time for them to come round when someone else will be with you, if they are a genuine caller this will not be a problem.

It is also important to that you remember that you do not have to let them in, so if you do not feel comfortable just tell them no.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 763 Paul Hicks on Leicester (0116) 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officer's identification number 0763. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.

* Please note, some mobile phone service providers may charge for this call.
