Green-fingered residents growing vegetables which can beet off competition are being sought to take part in a special show at Snibston Discovery Museum.

People who grow their own fruit, vegetables or flowers at home or on an allotment are invited to show their potential prize produce at the second Old Leicestershire Miners Horticultural Show, being held at Snibston Miners Gala next month.

There are 60 different classes for fruit, vegetables, flowers and cake making. Kids can take part too with classes including miniature gardens, the longest runner bean and the funniest shaped vegetable.

Entry is free and the show will be judged by members of the Leicestershire Guild of Judges. The show is taking place on Saturday, 12th September and will be open to the public at 2pm.

Last years show was a great success with over 140 entries and organisers are hoping for more this year.

Horticultural shows were a major part of Miners Galas in the past and the Leicester branch of the National Union of Mineworkers is supporting the event again this year. Leicestershire collieries used to compete against each other to produce the best stand of fruit, flowers and vegetables. Many tricks were used to grown the best produce, including growing carrots and parsnips in drain pipes.

Anyone wanting to enter can call Snibston on 01530 278444 for a show schedule which gives details of all the classes and the show rules.

More information is also available at www.snibston.com/MinersGala.

Snibston Miners Gala takes place between 10am and 5pm on Saturday 12th September. The parade starts at Memorial Square at 10.30am and is being run in conjunction with Coalville Town Centre Partnership.
