Snibston is playing host to a celebratory exhibition featuring displays, images and stories from 100 years of Coalvilles King Edward VII Grammar School.

The free exhibition starts tomorrow (Friday) and marks the on-going relationship between the County Council's multi-award-winning visitor attraction Snibston and the local community.

Principal Curator, Carolyn Abel, said: Every year we host a number of exhibitions produced by local groups and organisations that reflect the histories and interests of communities living in Leicestershire. This includes the Coalville Photographers Society - created here at the former Snibston Colliery in the 1970s, Ibstock Art Group and work from existing pupils at the King Edward VII College."

Elizabeth Riding, a former student at the school from the 1940s, fondly remembers her days there. She said: The year 1909 brought an important event to Coalville - a new grammar school on Forest Road which was run by then head teacher, Dr Storr-Best and two supporting masters. Starting with just 37 pupils, the school quickly expanded and in 1911 girls were also allowed to attend the school.

"Pupils came from surrounding villages such as Oaks in Charnwood, Nailstone, Osgathorpe, Battram and Thornton, and often travelled by pony and trap. The school fees were 2 2sh per term (equivalent to 630 in todays money).

"The school grew in size (a library and gymnasium added) and a sports pavilion was dedicated to the memory of pupils and a member of staff who died in the First World War.Later, tennis courts were added through money donated by the Old Edwardians in honour of students killed in the Second World War.

"As school numbers reached 800, it outgrew the Forest Road premises and students had to go to outlying classrooms at Whitwick and Griffydam. Finally, in 1962, a magnificent new school building was opened at Castle Rock.

"King Edward VII Grammar School went from strength to strength and the old school uniform colours of green and gold (cabbage and custard) remained until the school became an upper school and, in 1972, became the King Edward VII Community College which is a thriving Science and Sports College today."

This year marks 100 years of the Coalville Schools opening and a celebratory reunion for former staff and scholars will be held at the Forest Road premises.

Elizabeth said: There will be much talk and reminiscing about old times, laughter and perhaps a few tears at recollections of friends now gone, but we will be celebrating the never-to-be-forgotten Cabbage and Custard Days.

The reunion is on Saturday, 3rd October between 2pm and 10pm at Forest Road, Coalville. Entrance is 2.
