21 September 2009Smashin summer time!

2 Summer annual events at three of Leicestershires main attractions smashed previous visitor numbers and are now the most successful on record!

Leicestershire County Councils Bosworth Battlefield, Beacon Hill Country Park and Snibston Discovery Museum counted a record breaking number of over 14,000 visitors when they held major annual events.

Bosworth Battlefields annual re enactment weekend in August celebrated its most successful event in nearly 25 years.

In 2008, records show the number of visitors to the event peaked at 2,900. However for the 2009 event, figures rose around 82% to 5300 visitors, as people from as far afield as Australia and America turned out to witness the death of a king and the birth of the all powerful Tudor dynasty. The War of the Roses thrilled audiences with daring displays of jousting, skills at arms and the finale of King Richard IIIs last stand.

The National Forests fifth Wood Fair event took place on Bank Holiday Monday, August 31st, at Beacon Hill Country Park.

Attendance to the Wood Fair this year rose around 58% from 3400 visitors last year to 5400 this year.

There were live demonstrations of woodworking skills, craft displays and chainsaw sculpting, as well as stories from the Wild Man of the Woods, birds of prey, craft activities, archery and a climbing wall for the younger ones.

Snibston hosted its second Annual Miners Gala to celebrate Coalvilles mining heritage. The event also included its 2nd Horticultural Show on Saturday, September 12th.

One thousand extra visitors came to the free event where records show almost 3,000 people came in through the front doors of Snibston with 115 visitors travelling by train. Entertaining the visitors were the stall holders and the Desford Colliery band and spectators, 323 people, who added to the atmosphere.

On offer were a fruit, flower and vegetable show, colliery and railway tours, displays by local history groups, mining memorabilia and ferret racing.

Ernie White, lead member for museums and countryside services said, Were delighted with the new record number of visitors to these annual events this year. I look forward to events returning bigger and better next year!
