The oldest serving police officer in Leicestershire is retiring from the Force on his 63rd Birthday.

PC 112 Roy Houghton joined Leicestershire Constabulary in March 1992 after working as a Charge Hand and Fitter for eighteen years at Ibstock Brick. PC Houghton became a police officer at the age of 45 when the age limit on joining the police was dropped and the restriction on wearing glasses was lifted.

He started his police career as a General Duties Officer in Coalville but has been the Principal Beat Officer in Ibstock, his home town, for the last 10 years.

He said; I am a great believer in neighbourhood policing and it has really taken over my life. I know everyone on my beat because I live there too and people are willing to tell me things because they know me.

Ive got mixed feelings about leaving because I still love the job as much as I did when I started but I do think it is the right time to go. I think its going to be hard to adapt at first but I plan to have a couple of months off and then I shall start to look for something else.

PC Houghton has successfully applied to be a Special Police Constable and will be sworn in the day after he retires. He was also a policeman in the Territorial Army for 29 years.

In his eighteen years with the police, PC Houghton has been given two Chief Constables Commendations. The first was nine years ago when he and other officers tackled two men who were on the run from firearms officers. Roy used his local knowledge and found the two suspects in Ibstock. He and two other officers tackled them and made an arrest and found a pistol in the waistband of the suspects trousers.

On the second occasion, in 2008, he ran after a man who was running away from the scene of a road traffic collision. While trying to arrest him PC Houghton was head butted and knocked unconscious. While on his way to hospital he used his radio to give officers information about the suspect and they were able to arrest him.

Pauline Pettitt, a Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator and former Police Volunteer has known Roy for over 30 years. She said; Roy has shown an amazing dedication to the beat often coming to Parish Council meetings on his days off. He has immersed himself in the beat and got to know the people in Ibstock, Ellistown and Heather and he knows the issues inside out. There will be a great many people who will be sorry to see him go and I know I speak for everyone when I wish him the very best of luck for the future.

PC Paul Hicks will be taking over from Roy when he retires and has already been shadowing him.

Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of North West Leicestershire Local Policing Unit, said; I have the greatest respect for Roy, there arent many officers who want to be out on the beat in al weathers during the day and night at the age of 63. Roy has been a great beat officer for the Ibstock, Heather and Ellistown neighbourhood and I am thrilled that we will still benefit from his experience as he will soon be patrolling the streets of North West Leicestershire as a Special Police Constable. I wish him the very best for a happy and, I suspect, busy retirement.

PC Houghton met the Temporary Chief Constable, Chris Eyre, on Wednesday 4th November 2009 to commemorate his remarkable achievement. He officially retires from the Force on Friday November 20th 2009.
