Confidential advice available for people who suffer domestic abuse in North West Leicestershire.
Posted on 23/11/09
Confidential advice available for people who suffer domestic abuse in North West Leicestershire.
Free drop in clinics for victims of domestic abuse are being held in North West Leicestershire as part of National Domestic Violence Week.
The campaign, which runs for a week from Monday 23rd November, aims to encourage people to come forward for support and advice, as well as promote the services are available for those affected.
The week will see the launch of free domestic abuse legal advice clinics in the Coalville area. The clinics will offer a one stop shop for victims seeking to leave abusive relationships. A solicitor will be available to offer free advice and support around legal issues for those experiencing domestic abuse. For more information about the free confidential advice sessions telephone 01509 552 549.
During the week a Domestic Abuse walkthrough unit, funded by the Home Office, will be stationed at Stephenson College. The Colleges Director, Sue Hughes, who is responsible for Safeguarding and student protection said; "We have a responsibility to safeguard and protect all of the young people and vulnerable adults that attend the College, and we take this responsibility very seriously. We will be actively promoting the initiative and encouraging everyone at the College to visit the Domestic Abuse Unit.
The unit is separated into eight partitions. Each section is painted to depict a day in the life of someone experiencing domestic abuse. The unit is geared towards raising awareness around domestic abuse, and frontline workers will be on hand to offer advice and information to those that visit.
Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of North West Leicestershire Local Policing Unit, said; We take incidents of domestic abuse very seriously and work closely with a lot of other agencies to make sure victims receive the best advice and support. We have a team of highly trained domestic abuse officers who are available to help victims break the cycle of violence but we also know that some people dont always want to talk to the police so the drop in clinics will offer a chance to talk to other experts in the field, such as Womens Aid, to get the best advice.
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Chair of the Partnership in safer Communitities, said: We believe all people have the right to live safely and without fear of violence and abuse. We are committed to raising awareness of domestic abuse and will continue to work towards its prevention by assisting those affected by this crime.
Domestic abuse can affect anyone and one local woman agreed to share her story:
Six years ago Molly was hopelessly in love and planning her future with Simon. They married, and for a year they seemed blissfully happy. When Molly fell pregnant things changed. Simon became agitated more easily. The first time he hit her was when her daughter was three months old. Molly believed him when he said sorry and did not want to separate.
The abuse continued and Simon told her nobody else would want her, and if she left he would kill her. It took three more years for Molly to have the courage to seek help. With 80 in her purse she arranged to stay with her sister and contacted a local solicitor. The solicitor was able to suggest support agencies she felt could help. One year on and Molly and her daughter are now renting a house. Her daughter has just started primary school.
The campaign is supported by representatives from the North West Leicestershire Partnership in Safer Communities (NWL PISC) which is committed to tackling domestic violence.
