Cross border initiative pays dividends in North West Leicestershire
A cross border operation to target travelling criminals in North West Leicestershire and South Derbyshire has led to 11 arrests in four days.
Operation Anatomy was launched on Monday 23rd November 2009 in response to an increase in crime in the villages between Swadlincote and Ashby de la Zouch.
Officers from both Forces ran a join operation to stop criminals who live in Derbyshire travelling into Leicestershire to commit crime and vice versa. Following detailed crime pattern analysis, a dedicated patrol strategy was put in place to cover the large geographical area around Swadlincote, Appleby Magna, Measham and Oakthorpe.
A team of dedicated officers in patrol cars worked on both sides of the border, actively targeting people who were out in the early hours of the morning, stopping them and asking them to account for their movements. As a result they made 11 arrests for offences such as burglary, possession of drugs, robbery, vehicle crime, theft and drink driving.
On one occasion, Derbyshire officers stopped and detained three men in Swadlincote at 4am who had a number of items in their car which they suspected were stolen from cars in Ashby and Coalville. They contacted officers from Leicestershire who arrested them on suspicion of theft from motor vehicle and they are currently on bail.
Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of North West Leicestershire Local Policing Unit, said; Wed noticed an increase in crime in the area that crosses our border so it made sense to tackle the problem together so Operation Anatomy was launched. Not only have we made a large number of arrests during this operation but we had very few crimes reported to us in the areas we were targeting so it has achieved exactly what we wanted it to do, weve targeted criminals and disrupted crime. Another success of the operation has been the joint working between us and our colleagues in South Derbyshire which has worked very well and I would have no hesitation in running a similar operation again in the future.
Inspector Alan Sandeman, Commander of the Derby South Policing Section, said; "The operation was a great success for Swadlincote Police and mirrored the significant reduction in Leicestershire. The collateral benefits of working on both sides of the border can be seen in the reduction in crime over the last week of November. I am very pleased with the results and feedback from officers involved was excellent. I have no doubt that similar operations will be run with our colleagues from Leicestershire, as we have mutual interests in reducing crime and increasing public confidence."
Anyone with any information about crime in their area can call Crimestoppers which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111. *Some mobile phone networks may charge for this call.
