Hear latest on North West £60,000
Posted on 02/02/10
Chief Executive's
Interactive meetings in North West Leicestershire are enabling residents to pick up the latest on how 60,000 will boost the local area.
Each community forum is giving out 20,000 to local projects following Dragons' Den-style workshops where people pitched ideas and voted for their favourites.
All the suggestions have now been looked at in detail and from next week, residents have the opportunity to hear more about the top projects. These include youth forums, a community radio station, a skate park and a play area.
The projects are in line with broad priorites for the area which include health, improving the environment and increasing opportunities for younger and older people.
David Parsons, Leader of Leicestershire County Council, said: "Getting residents involved in helping to decide how 60,000 will improve their communities is an innovative idea.
"I'm pleased that people have come forward with suggestions and voted for their favourites and I hope that they will come along to find out more."
Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Community Forum Chair, said: "The response to this has been fantastic, with many community groups and residents pitching their ideas and suggestions on how the money can be best spent to improve life in their communities.
"We have now narrowed these down and will be discussing the most interesting and popular projects at the next forums."
North West Leicestershire residents are urged to go along to their local community forum and get involved in shaping their local area - details are below:
- Coalville - 6.30pm on Wednesday, 10th February at Ibstock Town Cricket Club on Melbourne Road (covers Coalville, Heather, Ravenstone, Snibston, Charley, Ellistown and Ibstock)
- Valley - 6.15pm on Monday, 22nd February at Long Whatton Community Centre, Main Street (covers Lockington, Hemington, Kegworth, Castle Donington, Breedon on the Hill, Long Whatton, Diseworth, Worthington, Osgathorpe, Coleorton and Swannington)
- Ashby, Measham and Moira - 6pm on Thursday, 25th February at Ashby de la Zouch Town Council, Legion House, South Street (covers Ashby, Measham, Oakthorpe, Appleby Magna, Snarestone, Swepstone, Moira and surrounding areas)
The programme is led by the County Council in conjunction with district councils and supported by a range of local agencies.
For more information, please contact Bill Malley on 0116 305 5562 or visit www.leicestershireforums.org .
Community forums offer people a great opportunity to find out what is happening on their doorstep, give views, get answers to queries and influence local decision-making.
Since they started in January last year, over 3,500 people throughout the County have taken part and picked up the latest on services for older people, anti-social behaviour, eco-town proposals, grants, development plans, lorry routes, tackling crime, transport, housing, jobs, loan sharks, roads, community hospitals plus much more.
Notes:
A community forum is a meeting place for residents, local businesses, voluntary and community groups, councillors and service providers.
There are 27 forums across Leicestershire which bring together elected representatives across all tiers of local government - County, District and Borough and Parish, together with a range of other community representatives.
Community forums involve Leicestershire County Council, District and Borough Councils, NHS Leicestershire County and Rutland, Leicestershire Police and Leicestershire Together partners
Although they do not have formal decision-making powers, forums are important bodies of influence - there is a 'duty to respond' to actions recommended.
