26 August 2010Transformative arts light up Snibston

A programme to create ground-breaking art works was launched at Leicestershire County Councils Snibston Discovery Museum last night.

The launch of Transform was celebrated with a light show projection which lit up the museums reknowned colliery buildings, and marked the start of a significant 12-month arts project funded by Arts Council England.

Transform will place art at the heart of Snibstons regeneration programme, commissioning artists to work with local people to produce work inspired by the history and heritage of Leicestershire and Snibston.

Workshops will be provided as part of Transform to support artists wanting to develop their careers in the area of creating site specific art, thus contributing to the Creative Economy which has a turnover of 718 million in Leicestershire.

Transform will also provide opportunities for local people to actively engage with the arts and new and unique experiences for the 100,000 visitors that come to Snibston every year.

Peter Osborne, Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, said; "These new commissions continue Snibston's tradition of providing innovative art for the people of Leicestershire, and we look forward to seeing Transform taking shape.

The museum provides inspiration to people on many levels and I welcome the initiative as a project to transform Leicestershires heritage into works that can be cherished by the generations to come.

Steve Gray, Chair of Coalville Town Centre Partnership said, The arts are a fantastic way of engaging many people. Often it is a conduit for talented individuals to further their aspirations and by launching a project like Transform it will firmly put Coalville on the map in terms of being at the forefront of innovation.

Sarah Reed of Arts Council England said Arts Council decided to fund the project because we recognised that Transform promotes new ideas and helps people to use the arts in new contexts.

Our decision to work with this unique heritage centre reflected our ambition to develop rural visual arts and enable more people to experience great art in rural places. This project is a great example of contemporary art and heritage working together to change our perspectives of past, present and future.
