Street light switch-off sparks savings
Posted on 09/09/10

Ambitious plans to switch off street lights across Leicestershire are already saving cash and cutting carbon.
Since the County Council launched the project 100 days ago, the plug has been pulled on 60 lights and another 1,300 village lamps have been switched off late at night.
Just these changes alone will reduce CO2 emissions by 106 tonnes and save 19,000 over the first 12 months - as the scheme grows, it will cut costs by 700,000 each year and carbon emissions by 3,000 tonnes.
Over the next few months, around 1,000 more lights across Leicestershire will be turned off and another 28 villages are set to get involved in part-night lighting.
Locations already taking part include Smeeton Westerby, Quorn, Huncote, Kibworth Beauchamp, Swannington, Lubenham and Croft - in these areas, street lights are switched off between midnight and 5.30am.
Overall, the council is aiming to:
- Dim around 2,000 roadside lights on main routes, between 7pm and 7am
- Switch off around 1,000 lights in rural areas or where they are not near houses
- Switch off up to 40,000 streetlights between midnight and 5.30am in a number of villages
The emergency services have not objected to the idea in principle and are being consulted on every scheme.
Mike Preston, County Council cabinet member for climate action, said: It makes sense to dim lights beside main roads and switch off others that aren't needed, and I'm pleased our innovative steps are already cutting energy costs and pollution.
The vast majority of feedback has been positive and although we do recognise there may be public concerns about switching off street lights late at night, other councils, like Gloucestershire and Essex, have adopted this approach and found that it has not led to increased crime.
Just by making these simple changes, we can cut annual carbon emissions by 3,000 tonnes and thats got to be worthwhile.
The scheme will contribute four per cent of the Councils proposed 30 per cent reduction in carbon emissions by 2014.
Other councils which have made street lighting changes include Leicester (dimming of lights on main routes), Gloucestershire (dimming and part-night lighting), Essex (part-night lighting) and Buckinghamshire (switching lights off).
