31 August 2010Quirky walks get people out and about*** The media are asked to contact the Press Office if they intend to attend a walk by calling 0116 3055712. The full programme is available at www.leics.gov.uk/walkingweek ***

A ramble around a shopping centre, a word search walk and a bus ride and stride will be taking place in a bid to get people active.

They form part of a programme of urban as well as rural, and unusual as well as more traditional, led walks taking place across Leicestershire during Walking Week, which kicks off on September 4.

Some of the quirkier events include a poetry walk in Wigston, an amble to find hidden words in Sence Valley Forest Park and a walk around Leicesters Highcross Shopping Centre, as well as a series of strolls especially designed for parents and carers with buggies.

A total of 75 led walks will take place during the week that has been coordinated by Leicestershire County Council and involves 25 partners including Leicester City Council, district and borough councils and The Leicester-Shire and Rutland Sports Partnership.

Other walks with a difference include a bus ride and stride a walk from Ratcliffe on the Wreake to Gaddesby which involves a bus dropping off and picking up walkers, a trip on a Great Central Railway train and walk back across the Charnwood fields, and a ramble which includes a stretch of the newly restored Ashby Canal.

Matthew Lugg, Director of Environment and Transport at Leicestershire County Council, said: A wide variety of led walks will take place during Walking Week, from more traditional rambles across some of Leicestershires stunning and historical countryside to walks exploring some of our urban gems.

You can choose a walk depending on your fitness, location and interests. I would urge people to have a look at the website and find out more about the array of walks that are on offer, many of which are free.
