1 September 2010Miners' Gala offers something for everyone

Come and celebrate Leicestershire's mining heritage at the Snibston Miners' Gala, a fun-filled day with something for everyone to enjoy.

Starting with a colourful street parade at 10.30am, this traditional community fete is being organised by Leicestershire County Council, and this will be the third year it has been re-created since the original event ceased in the 1980s.

Snibston will open its doors to visitors free of charge on Saturday September 11th and, for the first time, a free-to-ride bus will collect and return gala goers from Coalvilles surrounding villages including Swannington, Hugglescote, Ravenstone, Coleorton, Thringstone, Donington Le Heath, Ellistown and Whitwick.

The Gala's line-up this year includes the world-famous Desford Colliery band, Snibston Co-op band, the Expressions dance group, childrens activities and crafts, tractor rides to the county park, ferret racing, railway tours, whippet racing, colliery tours, and a series of trade and information stands from various local organisations.

A variety of food and refreshments are available, including a traditional hog roast and the newly reopened Century Theatre bar. Local radio station Hermitage FM will compere the event and station mascot Hermie the Hedgehog will make in a prickly appearance!

Avid gardeners can test their green fingered skills at the Old Leicestershire Miners Horticultural Show. Judging will start at 11am, with a range of prizes to reward the entrants' finest home-grown fruit, vegetables and flowers.

Categories for cakes and jams and flower arrangements are also available at the Horticultural Show, as is a section for children. Interested parties can obtain a list of categories from Snibston, either in person or by calling 01530 278444. Entries must be registered by 10am on the day.

Jackie Dickinson, Vice Chairman of Leicestershire County Council said: The people of Coalville and its surrounding communities have really embraced the return of the Miners Gala which goes to show that this kind of community event is still very much in demand.

The last couple of years have been very successful with over 3,300 people attending in 2009. This year there is even more to look forward to, and I hope that local people, and those further afield in similar ex-mining communities, will come and enjoy the day.

The Miners' Gala is part of the Heritage Open Days scheme, a national initiative designed to encourage people to enjoy their local museums, heritage centres and historic buildings. The event is sponsored by Leicestershire Area NUM and supported by the Coalville Town Centre Partnership.

Further information on the gala, the free bus, the Horticultural show and parade can be obtained by calling 01530 278444 or by visiting www.snibston.com/minersgala. Gala opening hours are from 10am until 5pm, on Saturday 11th September. Entry is free, although some activities require a small charge to cover costs.
