Over 200 bikers descend on Snibston
Posted on 09/09/10
Community Services
More than 200 motorcyclists are expected to descend on Snibston Discovery Museum this weekend.
The motorcyclists are from Jumbo Great Britain, a charity organisation based in the West Midlands that enables children with a disability or special needs to experience great days out at local attractions. They will be bringing around 100 children in their side cars to Snibston for a fun-filled outing. The charity has been taking children out and about on Jumbo Run trips for 49 years and previously came to Snibston back in 2006.
The entourage will leave Coleshill at around 10am on Sunday 12th and rev-up at Snibston at around 11am. They will be greeted by Leicestershire County Council Chairman, Peter Osborne, who will officially welcome them to Snibston.
A variety of bikes carrying people from across the country and beyond will provide a magnificent site as the charity begins its outing, doing what it does best, providing a special day for most-deserving children.
The children will have plenty to see and do with lots of interactive, moving exhibits and fascinating displays about fashion, design, technology, science and industry. They can explore the seven hands-on galleries; ride Pitt the diesel locomotive, visit the country park, or have fun in the various play areas.
Snibston attracts around 100,000 visitors each year and hosts a range of events. It was awarded the Bronze Award for the Think Family category in 2008 and is hoping for gold in 2010. Having spent the last two years assessing its provision for families and those with access needs, it is proud of its ethos and flexibility in making Snibston a great day out for everyone.
Also long-listed for the Guardian Kids in Museums award earlier this year, Snibston has taken care to ensure that all visitors are catered for through its play areas, hand-on exhibits, food offering and facilities.
Likewise, staff at Snibston are disability aware and the facilities also reflect the importance of access for all.
Peter Osborne, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, said:
"Snibston is a fantastic venue for children and offers so many different activities for children of all abilities to join in with. I am pleased that the charity has once again decided to come along to Snibston and I am sure that they will all have a marvellous day."
People requiring further information about the Jumbo Run organisation should contact Lyn Stokes at petlyn@blueyonder.co.uk or visit: www.jumbogb.org

Notes to the Editor
Snibston visitor figures
From April 2009 to March 2010 Snibston achieved a total of 99,427 gallery visitors (excluding the country park). This is a 3.7% increase during the full year.
Snibston first opened in 1992 and comes of age in 2010 as it reaches its 18th birthday. Since opening, it has received over 2 million visitors.
