15 September 2010Parade is a hit as Miners' gala goes down well

Snibston welcomed over 3,500 gala goers on Saturday as it held its annual Miners Gala reminiscent of those from the areas mining heyday.

Local residents gathered to see the parade as it marched along Margaret Street and through Coalville, before entering Snibstons Ashby Road gate.

Led by the Leicestershire Area NUM representatives and Leicestershire Co-op Brass Band, the 160-strong entourage also included local dignitaries, children and former miners. Children from local schools, including Woodstone in Ravenstone, carried homemade miners lamps and helmets which were made in workshops held at the museum during the school holidays.

Completing the parade was the Miners Gala open top bus. A new edition to this years event, it provided free transport to those in surrounding villages wanting to attend the gala.

Brass band performances by the Junior Co-op, Leicestershire Co-op and Desford Colliery bands were highlights of the day and added to the buzzing atmosphere of this community event. Local radio station, Hermitage FM provided music and narration throughout the day.

The Old Leicestershire Miners Horticultural show was bigger and better than last year with more entries in the 66 classes available. Other activities included local history and mining memorabilia stands, colliery and railway tours, tractor and trailer rides, train rides, whippet and ferret racing, performances by local arts groups, Expressions Dance and Stealth, plus childrens activities.

Having grown during the last three years, Snibston Miners' Gala has recently been shortlisted for a Renaissance Regional Heritage Award under the 'best event' category.

Jackie Dickinson, Vice Chairman of Leicestershire County Council said: I was delighted to see such a great turn out for the gala. Despite the initial spate of grey clouds, the weather was kind and people came out in their droves for this highly enjoyable celebration.

I was especially pleased to see the parade full of children carrying their mining-related crafts. Mining has been an important part of this area for centuries and its important that the younger generations are given the chance to appreciate the industry on which North West Leicestershire was built.

Next years Miners Gala at Snibston is due to be held in mid-September 2011. For general enquiries regarding the gala, or to book a trade stand, please call 01530 278 444.
