17 September 2010Leicestershire schools awarded for global links

A record number of Leicestershire schools are celebrating after scooping major awards for their flourishing worldwide links with countries as widespread as Jamaica, Nepal and Kenya.

A total of 30 Leicestershire County Council schools double last years number have received the Governments prestigious International School Award. This recognises their outstanding work with partner schools in places which also include Ethiopia, Kuwait, China, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, France and Italy.

The schools involved have been working on joint projects to support learning in science, geography, sport, citizenship, rights and responsibilities, languages and learning about the environment.

The majority of schools in Leicestershire now have international partnerships to help develop pupils global awareness, an understanding of other cultures and preparing young people for work in a global economy.

Examples of exciting projects schools have been involved with include students at Gartree High School in Oadby learning about life in Kenya from their partner school just outside Mombassa. The students have also been sharing projects and ideas about the environment, culture and food in each others countries.

Longslade Community College and Stonehill High School in Birstall have been working with partner schools in Kuwait, sharing information, experiences and greetings cards for important festivals such as Christmas and Eid as part of their religious education lessons. The schools will also be hosting a visit from Kuwaiti teachers in October.

Bosworth Community College in Desford, Market Bosworth High School and Winstanley Community College in Braunstone Town have been working with schools in Nigeria and Sudan. They have shared students work about national cultures and produced accounts and presentations on daily life. The sixth formers at Bosworth College produced a thoughtful DVD about national identity.

A group of four schools in the Lutterworth area have a flourishing partnership with schools in Kingston, Jamaica. Lutterworth College, Lutterworth High School, Gilmorton Chandler C of E Primary School and Birkett House Special School are all involved.

The schools have exchanged information on a typical day and Birkett House students produced a presentation and video to send to Jamaica.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for the Children and Young Peoples Service, said: Its wonderful that the work of so many Leicestershire County Council schools has been recognised with these prestigious awards and Id like to send my congratulations to all involved.

International links adds a global dimension to pupils learning experience and are helping young people to develop vital skills.

Schools international links are funded by the British Council.
