Officers take part in national exhibition
The stand at the exhibition
Police officers from East Midlands Airport have taken part in a national exhibition in Peterborough to promote the responsible and safe disposal of liveried vehicles.
The conference was held at the East of England Showground on Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th September 2010 and was organised by the National Association of Police Fleet Managers. The exhibition is recognised by the motor industry as one of the best Police and Emergency Service Transport Shows in Europe. Representatives from a range of enforcement agencies, emergency services and government departments can see comprehensive displays of vehicles, equipment and services.
The Fleet Auction Group (FLAG) in Coalville had a stand at the event and invited Leicestershire Constabulary to join them. Called Blue Lights Lift Barriers it was designed to draw attention to the dangers of liveried vehicles falling into the wrong handsso called Trojan Horses.
Inspector Tony Marson explains why Leicestershire Constabulary became involved in this years event; Part of our counter terrorism work under Project Griffin warns businesses and other delegates about the possibility of former liveried vehicles falling into the wrong hands and being used by people involved in criminal activity to gain access to restricted areas. After all if someone sees a vehicle with blue flashing lights they automatically think let it through quickly.
The conference enabled us to engage with businesses at the heart of the fleet management industry, businesses that are the key to ensuring potentially lucrative vehicles arent sold to the wrong people.
It is members of the public and business communities who are our eyes and ears and it is likely to be them, not the police, who will thwart the next terrorist attack so we keen to get that message out as far and wide as possible - it is partnership working at its very best.
When businesses learn about Project Griffin and understand how it fits into their business remit, and the benefits it can bring them in terms of crime reduction, they are really keen to get involved. Weve had a number of companies approach us since the exhibition enquiring about our next Project Griffin training day.
Andrew Walker, the Chief Executive Officer of Fleet Auction Group in Coalville said; Involvement with Project Griffin is central to our vehicle remarketing partnerships with Local Authorities, the emergency services and public utilities. Best practice and corporate responsibility is high on the agenda for all these organisations and the initiative is a perfect fit with The Fleet Auction Groups business ethos.
If you would like to get involved in a Project Griffin training day please contact Police Community Support Officer, Tony Gallagher at Leicestershire Constabulary on Leicester (0116) 222 2222 and, when prompted, key in his collar number 6517 or email him at Michael.Gallagher@leicestershire.pnn.police.uk.
