Exhibition captures 50 years of Leicestershire's nature
Posted on 28/10/10
Community Services
A new exhibition that captures over 50 years of nature in Leicestershire will be on display at Leicestershire County Councils Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville.
The display marks the work of the Loughborough Naturalists Club a club formed in 1960 by a small group of people with an interest in wildlife. The club now has 150 members, whose individual interests range from fungi, spiders, dragonflies, lichens and mosses to flowering plants, mammals and birds.
The exhibition will be officially opened by Colin Green, local wildlife expert, on Tuesday 9th November at 10.30am and will be on display until Friday 31st December.
The exhibition celebrates half a century of walks, talks, outings, fieldwork, recording and enjoyment of natural heritage. It tells the story of the Loughborough Naturalists Club showcasing its collections and underlines the importance of keeping recorded information. The exhibition explores the rich diversity of local wildlife.
Over the years, the club has worked closely with the County Council in recording Leicestershires natural environment and preserving extraordinary specimen of fungi, plants, beetles, plant bugs and other insects. Records produced by the club including surveys from 1961 of badger sets in the County, still form the backbone of information about the elusive creatures in Leicestershire today.
Peter Osborne, the Chairman of Leicestershire County Council, said:
"This is a fantastic exhibition that really does capture the natural beauty of our County. Members of the club volunteer so much of their spare time to help preserve important information about some of Leicestershires wildlife and plants. I would urge people to come and view the exhibition and take a look at some of the wonderful items that are on display."
Entrance to see the exhibition is free. For more details please call Snibston on 01530 278444 or alternatively visit: www.snibston.com
For those with an interest in nature, Snibston will also be hosting two Meet the Expert talks during November:
- Charnwood Naturalists 100 Years Ago by Tony Fletcher, Thursday 11th November, 7pm 3.50
- Biological Recording in Leicestershire and Rutland by Gareth price, Tuesday 30th November, 2pm, FREE.
