Have your say on county's green spaces
Posted on 08/11/10
Chief Executive's
Leicestershire County Council is giving the public a say over which green spaces should be protected from development.
The authority is inviting parish councils to indicate which green spaces they would like to protect and will then ask the public, through the county councils community forums, early next year.
The Coalition Government has stated that decisions about how much and where development will take place should in future involve local communities much more than in the past. It has also stated that communities should be able to protect the green spaces they think are most important.
County council leader David Parsons said: I think it is really important that local communities can shape the future of their areas and the county council is committed to help them do it.
There will be hard decisions about where development should take place so helping communities decide the most important green spaces is crucial.
At the moment, there are green wedges in the county around Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley and Coalville.
Residents are campaigning for stretches of countryside, including green wedge areas between Coalville and Whitwick and around Charnwood, to be protected.
Last month, the county councils cabinet agreed to launch public consultation on green spaces and wedges, push for a consistent approach across Leicestershire and Leicester and request district planners and partner organisations to avoid making decisions which could entail the loss of green spaces, ahead of the consultation.
