Four young road safety champions will each receive an early Christmas present this week in the shape of a brand new bike.

The children are junior road safety officers at their schools and won the prizes after entering a competition held at a series of road safety events last month

Over 300 pupils from across Leicestershire attended the events, held to introduce the County Councils Junior Road Safety Officer Scheme and provide details about how to become one.

The pupils worked with their parents and teachers to complete a quiz by visiting various display stands including the Community Speed Watch Team, Police Traffic Management and the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland Safety Camera Team.

The four winners will be presented with their prizes at County Hall on Wednesday (24th November) by Lesley Pendleton, County Council cabinet member for environment and transport. The bikes have come from Just Bikes in Ashby.

The four winners are:

  • Chloe Knight, (10), Coalville Belvoirdale Community Primary School
  • Isaac Grindrod (6), Burbage Church of England Infant School
  • Anna Henderson (10), Quorn St Bartholomews Church of England Primary School
  • Byron Kerry (10), Birstall Riverside Community Primary School

Mrs Pendleton said: Leicestershire County Council first introduced the junior road safety officer initiative in 1987 to promote road safety awareness in and around the countys schools.

The number of five to 11 year olds killed or seriously injured in Britain each year has reduced over the past two decades and schemes like this are contributing towards this, supporting our efforts to cut the number of child casualties.

Junior road safety officers are encouraged to promote road safety to their fellow students by maintaining notice boards giving information and advice on being aware and staying safe.

The scheme is offered to all primary schools in Leicestershire and at present, 80% of all local primary schools take part.
