Local artists will transform Snibston

Four Midlands based artists have been chosen to work with the local community to transform Leicestershire County Councils Snibston Discovery Museum.

Snibston and its collections will be the creative inspiration for works produced by the artists. From light and sound illuminations and projected imagery, through to exciting new walks for visitors and romantic poems, Snibston will be totally transformed.

The initiative is part of the Transform project which is a 12-month arts project funded by Arts Council England. Launched in August this year, the project is already well underway and a special event will be held next year in April to showcase these first pieces of artwork.

The four artists have been commissioned to create theses first activities to be delivered by Transform. The project will place art at the heart of Snibstons regeneration programme, commissioning artists to work with local people to produce work inspired by the history and heritage of Leicestershire and of the museum. Details of the artists and their themes for the project are as follows:

  • LifeCycle Future and Dreams

Geoff Broadway, a Birmingham based visual artist, has produced large scale video productions. He uses mixed media including lighting and projection to display work drawn from conversations with local people.

Geoff will create work exploring light, sound and projected imagery within Snibston and around Coalville. He will combine oral history, video portraits, images and historical material for an event called LifeCycle and will work with local people and businesses. His work will be showcased at an event in April.

  • Snibston Myth Maps Project

Jo Dacombe is a visual artist from Leicester who is particularly interested in making maps. She was commissioned to produce work as part of the emerging Cultural Quarter in Leicester

With the assistance of local families, Jo will set up three walks which explore the Snibston and the routes to and around it. She will record responses, ideas, imaginative stories, memories and histories from the walks and create maps which will mix fact, fiction, emotion and imagination. Jos work will be displayed in the form of three movable light boxes which will hold the illustrative maps for the walks.

  • Spoil Heap Harvest

Paul Conneally from Loughborough is an artist, poet and musician whose work is mainly drawn from research and localised investigation. He is a haiku poet and renga master a form of Japanese poetry.

Paul will be exploring the cultural connections with the romantic poets such as Wordsworth, around Coleorton Hall and using these connections as a starting point to engage with the outlying communities in the district.

  • Unearthing Stories

Brendan Jackson is a Wolverhampton/Poland based artist with considerable experience in community focussed projects using narrative, photography and web design to shape an share images and text.

Brendan will work with staff at Snibston to identify themes and stories that can be used for display including on the internet and through print. He will also be involved in the creating a sequence of projections and illuminations.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said:

The Transform project will provide fantastic opportunities for local people to actively engage with the arts and will create new and unique experiences for the 100,000 visitors that come to Snibston every year. Snibston provides inspiration to people on many different levels and Transform is a great way to capture this and turn it into artwork that can be appreciated by everyone.

Maurice Maguire the lead artist coordinating the Transform project said:

"We are delighted to be working with such experienced artists in realising the first stage of the work here at Snibston. Each of these projects will enhance the sense of place and provide great links to different local communities to engage in the future of the museum. We also have an Arts Ambassadors group supporting the programme and meeting on a regular basis. Anyone interested in helping with the work can contact me at the museum."
