Have your say on green spaces

People are being urged to have their say on the green spaces they would like to see protected.

The county council wants to hear from people about their favourite spots, whether they are parks and meadows or large green wedges between towns. It is launching an online map, to make consultation easier.

County council leader David Parsons said: We all have our favourite green spaces in Leicestershire, whether its a village green or a woodland. Now is the time to speak up and help to protect them for future generations.

The council and its partners want to know local peoples views on their green spaces, to guide our future decisions.

The information gathered will also help communities to develop their own neighbourhood plans.

The council launched the idea because the Governments localism policy aims to give local communities a greater say on planning decisions affecting their areas. Ministers are also proposing to create a new valued green spaces designation.

Last year, the council asked parish councils to identify which green areas should be protected. Now, it is encouraging the general public to express their views.

At the moment, Leicestershire has green wedges around Leicester, Loughborough, Hinckley and Coalville. Residents have been campaigning for stretches of countryside, including green wedge areas between Coalville and Whitwick and around Charnwood, to be protected.

There are two ways to make your views known:

Attend your local community forum meeting before the end of March there will be sessions on green spaces at each one.

Make your comments using our interactive, online map

The interactive map gives people a chance to take part from the comfort of their own home or with help at their local library. They can enter a postcode to find an area of interest, zoom in and select a particular place, and answer questions about it
