Voice views on potential waste sites

A new consultation enabling householders to have their say on potential recycling and waste sites launches this week.

From today, (7th February), residents in the city and county are urged to give their views on nine locations where waste could be treated, recycled or disposed of.

These are places where in principle, new or extensions to existing waste facilities should be acceptable and have been chosen from 20 put forward by land owners and private companies, following an initial assessment.

The sites are contained in a document compiled by the city and county councils who are required to identify where waste can be processed in Leicester and Leicestershire up until 2021.

Before final decisions are taken, residents and local agencies are being consulted and the list will be examined by a government inspector. Any proposed developments would require planning permission before they can proceed.

The consultation runs until 21st March and comments can be made through the County Council's website - at www.leics.gov.uk/site_allocations_document - or by calling 0116 305 7292 to request a form.

Byron Rhodes, County Council cabinet member for planning, said: "To reduce the waste thrown into landfill sites, we need to set out where waste could be potentially recycled, treated and disposed of in the city and county up until 2021. This process involves working with land owners, private companies and residents.

"Waste from commerce, industry and construction, as well as from households, needs to be dealt with somewhere and that is what we are planning for.

"We have a strong track record when it comes to recycling household waste but there will always be waste left over that requires treatment and disposal so it is vital that we plan for the future."

Councillor Abdul Osman, Leicester City Councils cabinet member for regeneration and transport, added: This is an important issue and I would encourage people to take part in the consultation to make their views known.

I would also use this opportunity to encourage people in the city to ensure they are doing their bit to recycle their waste.
