Counterfeit goods worth more than 200,000 have been seized from Leicestershires Donington Market by Police Officers and Trading Standards.

Six people have been arrested and interviewed and fake clothing and DVDs seized, following an operation by Leicestershire County Council and Coalville police.

The operation took place during the February half-term holidays. Counterfeit clothing including copies of Adidas, Ralph Lauren and G Star goods were seized from one stall and counterfeit DVDs were seized from another. Whilst most stall holders at Donington Market sell legitimate goods, officers have recently received complaints and intelligence that counterfeit goods were being sold.

Offences under the Trade Marks Act 1994, Fraud Act 2006, Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 and Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 are likely to have been committed.

One of the six people arrested was found to be an illegal immigrant. Investigations are continuing into the five other people, who have been released on bail, pending further enquiries. Potential penalties include a maximum of 10 years imprisonment, as well as the possible confiscation of financial assets.

Leicestershire County Councils head of Trading Standards, David Bull, said: This operation demonstrates that the Trading Standards Service is determined to tackle the trade in counterfeit goods, which are not only poor quality but, in some cases, pose a real safety hazard.

Anyone tempted to trade in fake goods ought to be aware of the serous consequences for themselves by breaking the law in this way."

PC Matt Bly from Coalville Police Station, said: This joint operation with Trading Standards was a big success it shows that the trade in fake goods is big business and selling them is not acceptable.
