Bikers bag hi-vis rucksacks

Hundreds of bright yellow, hi-vis rucksacks are being given away to bikers.

The free bag, from Leicestershire County Council, is designed to cut accidents involving motorcyclists by increasing drivers' awareness of motorbikes and scooters.

Last year, nine motorcyclists died on Leicestershire's roads and three have been killed since January.

Bikers are particularly vulnerable - they represent only one per cent of vehicles on the county's highways but make up 23 per cent of those killed or seriously injured.

Information on specialist one-to-one training aimed at bikers is also included with the rucksack. The six-hour session is designed to cut accidents by passing on tips linked to key risks such as negotiating bends, overtaking, positioning and junctions.

Rucksacks can be collected from one of 16 police stations and three libraries across the county.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "We are working hard with our partner organisations to reduce road casualties and are seeing significant reductions but are particularly keen to target motorcyclists.

"The rucksacks are a novel way of making bikers more visible and I'd urge residents to call in to a police station or library to pick one up.

"Riding a motorcycle requires a large amount of skill and every rider can benefit from extra training. The one-to-one tuition is an enjoyable experience, designed to make people more competent riders and benefits all motorcyclists, regardless of experience."

To collect a free rucksack, motorcyclists should call into the police stations or libraries below, with their bike and driving licence:

Police stations:

  • Loughborough,
  • Coalville,
  • Syston,
  • Melton
  • Hinckley.
  • Braunstone,
  • Market Harborough
  • Wigston
  • Oakham
  • Welford Road, Leicester
  • Norfolk Street, Leicester
  • Beaumont Leys, Leicester
  • Spinney Hill, Leicester
  • Melton Road, Leicester
  • Mansfield House, Leicester
  • Keyham Lane, Leicester

Libraries - Lutterworth, Blaby and Quorn.

Notes

Through the road safety partnership, the County Council works with neighbouring councils, the Highways Agency, police, health authority and fire and rescue service, to plan and coordinate road safety programmes. As well as safety camera enforcement, the partnership runs a comprehensive programme of publicity and training. During 2010, this is being targeted at cyclists, motor cyclists, young driver safety, school gate parking and support for Community Speed Watch.
