Boost for recycling come rain or shine

Brand new canopies are helping Leicestershire householders to recycle whatever the weather.

Leicestershire County Council has installed weather-proof covers at Melton and Mountsorrel sites to provide sheltered, dry areas where people can recycle their waste.

New signs have been installed too to make it easier for residents to find the relevant containers.

At Coalville, work to double the size of the TV, monitor, car battery and engine oil collection area has just been completed, to help householders recycle, and a new canopy installed.

Recycling and household waste sites are expecting the busiest period of the year so far this Easter.

There are 14 County Council sites where people can take a range of items to recycle, including electrical goods, scrap metal, clothes and garden waste, as well as household rubbish.

Every year, they handle around 90,000 tonnes of materials and over 70 per cent of the household waste is recycled or re-used.

Tony Kershaw, County Council cabinet member for waste management, said: "We want to boost recycling by making it easier for householders to use the our sites.

"Reducing the amount of rubbish sent to landfill is key to environmental sustainability and saves money. Leicestershire is already the top county partnership for recycling but this is a top priority and we're keen to increase rates even further.

"Easter is the busiest time of the year for our recycling and household waste sites. To avoid the rush and any queues, we'd advise people considering a spring clearout to plan ahead and think about visiting the sites during the week, avoiding the weekends and Bank Holidays.

From the start of April, all sites are open from 8am until 8pm, seven-days-a-week and extra resources will be provided to cope with the demand.
