Police recover property stolen from as far as Europe during Operation Consequence
Officers from Leicestershire Constabulary have seized property stolen from as far as Europe as part of ongoing Operation Consequence.
Police arrested a total of nine people during the two day planned operation, which took place yesterday (Wednesday April 13) and today (Thursday April 14).
People believed to be involved in the theft, cloning and selling of high value stolen vehicles were targeted at addresses in Hugglescote, Wolvey, Coalville, Dunton Bassett, Bedworth, Groby, Markfield, Leicester, Bagworth and North Kilworth.
Two caravans stolen from Germany and France, thousands of pounds worth of cash, an Audi estimated to be worth 45,000, a motorbike, mobile phones, computers, Class A drugs, vehicle documents and vehicle parts were all recovered.
A Range Rover, estimated to be worth 37,000, a BMW and thousands of pounds worth of cash were also seized under the Proceeds of Crime Act.
ANPR cameras were also utilised across the county during the operation.
Since Operation Consequence began in September 2009, serious acquisitive crimes like car cloning have been reduced by 23%. Thats the equivalent of over 6,000 fewer victims across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Superintendent Steph Pandit, the senior officer leading the operation, said: I am extremely impressed with the results of this enforcement and hope that residents will be too. Communities should feel reassured by the fact that we have targeted those who commit crime in their area.
Officers from across the force have utilised their skills throughout this two year investigation and the results of todays operation should send a clear message to offenders: There is no room for such criminality in Leicestershire and we are always looking at different ways to put a stop to it.
Most offenders do not understand the real impact their crimes have on their victims lives. The theft of a car can be a real blow to a victim, both financially and practically, having a huge impact on their livelihoods and their families.
Those stolen items recovered during our two day operation will now form part of the ongoing investigation but ultimately we hope to return them to their owners.
Through Operation Consequence we aim to reassure members of the public that we are tackling those crimes that they tell us matter most to them, crimes such as burglaries, theft from and of motor vehicles and the handling of stolen goods. Hopefully this particular operation will have done just that.
Nine people, seven men aged 25, two aged 32, 34, 35, 44 and 47-years-old and two women aged 20 and 36-years-old, were arrested.
Six men and two women have been released on police bail pending further enquiries and the three other men remain in police custody.
Anyone with any information is asked to call Leicester (0116) 222 2222 or Crimestoppers which is *free and anonymous on 0800 555 111. Information from the community is vital in helping Leicestershire Constabulary in the fight against crime.
