Volunteers show history of Coalville mining

A group of 12 volunteers with special educational needs have created an exciting new exhibition about the history of mining in Coalville.

The volunteers have spent more than a year planning, designing and producing the "What Mining Means to Me" exhibition which will be on display at Snibston Discovery Park from Monday, May 30th 2011.

The focal piece of the exhibition is a giant newspaper which features first-hand accounts and artwork from former miners in Coalville and other members of the public about the important role mining has played in their lives. Further museum artefacts are also on display.

The volunteers have been working with staff from Leicestershire County Councils Snibston Discovery Museum, which specialises in collecting and depicting material relating to coal mining, to create the exhibition.

Those taking part have had the opportunity to learn new skills and get involved in a project in their local community.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said: "The focus of this project has been about helping these volunteers to discover more about their heritage and where they live. They have talked to people living locally and explored a subject which has in some way impacted on so many local people's lives. The project has also been extremely valuable in helping volunteers to gain new skills."

Photo opportunity

Photographers and reporters are welcome to take pictures and interview David Sprason and volunteers who have worked on the project at Snibston Discovery Park on Tuesday, May 31st at 11am.
