Through New Eyes Snibston Exposed

Leicestershire County Councils Snibston Discovery Museum has appointed two new commissions to deliver art work inspired by the collections and heritage of this nationally-important site.

The commissioned work will be part of the Transform project which is an innovative arts initiative, supported by Arts Council England and is at the heart of Snibstons regeneration programme. Transform seeks to offer new perspectives on the fascinating history associated with Leicestershire and to get people actively involved in that process through the creation of original art works.

Claire Barber and Steve Swindells, from Huddersfield University have been commissioned to deliver their proposal Mining Couture. This will explore the connections between the language, tools and textures associated with the mining heritage and the extensive Fashion Collection at Snibston - such as underground seams of coal compared to the seams that run through fabrics and clothing. This project offers some exciting possibilities for the creation of truly innovative art works.

Meanwhile, through their project insideOut, artists Andy McKeown and Peter Walker plan to turn the colliery site (and collections) inside out by recording the details of the internal elements of the buildings and artefacts to create a layered projection and illumination on the outside of the colliery buildings. Part of the process will involve working with local communities to photograph some of the sites details and create new collections that will feature in the light show a two day event is planned for early December.

These commissions build on the work of the first set of art works created by Midlands-based artists Geoff Broadway, Paul Conneally, Jo Dacombe and Brendan Jackson. The results of their work were exhibited at Snibston in May and can be viewed on the website at www.snibston.com/transform. You can follow Paul Conneallys Snibston William Wordsworth Trail online and on the road; delight in Brendan Jacksons unique images and stories based on the collections at Snibston or view Geoff Broadways film about change and transformation as they are understood and experienced by a range of people who live and work in the Coalville area. Jo Dacombes Myth Maps, based on a series of walks with families, are still on display at the museum.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said "We are delighted at these appointments and excited by the artistic possibilities that will emerge through Transform. Snibston is Leicestershire County Council's flagship museum and is leading the way in its approaches to regenerating the museum's offer for our visitors and local communities."

This is endorsed by Sarah Reed of the Arts Council England who said "Arts Council England works to get great art to everyone by championing, developing and investing in artistic experiences that enrich people's lives. This project is a great example of heritage and the arts working together to increase audiences, promote new ideas and help people to take a fresh look at a fascinating historic collection and its unique setting. This exciting work will provide new opportunities for artists as well as animating and enlivening the museum using contemporary visual arts."
