Lunch clubs launch in Glenfield and Melton

Two lunch clubs are being launched by the county council, to help older and disabled people socialise and stay healthy.

Leicestershire County Council is joining forces with Midlands Co-operative Societys Melton and Glenfield foodstores, plus local voluntary groups, to run the monthly events.

Diners get a nutritionally balanced main course and a desert for 3.20, in sociable surroundings.

David Sprason, Cabinet member for Adults and Communities, said: Lunch clubs are a great opportunity for older and disabled people to make new friends and eat healthy meals. They also give their carers peace of mind.

The county council would like to thank Midlands Co-operative Society, the WRVS and Melton Volunteer Bureau for helping us to launch this initiative.

Lunch clubs can dramatically improve the health and wellbeing of older people, by ensuring good nutritional care, adequate hydration and enjoyable meal times. Good diets can increase an older persons resistance to disease and recovery from illness, trauma or surgery.

The Glenfield lunch club takes place every month from Wednesday, June 22nd at the Midlands Co-operative foodstore caf on Station Road, Glenfield. For further details, please contact Joanne Edwards, Service Delivery Manager, WRVS on 01159 873913 or

joanne.edwards@wrvs.org.uk or contact the Glenfield foodstore on leicester.members@midlandsco-op.com or 0116 2876503.

The Melton lunch club takes place every month from Monday 18th July at the Midlands Co-operative Foodstore caf on Scalford Road, Melton. For further details or help with transport, please contact Voluntary Action Melton on 01664 483043 or reception@voluntaryactionmelton.org.uk, or telephone the Melton foodstore on 01664 561071 or email: leicester.members@midlandsco-op.com

The new schemes build on the success of similar clubs at Coalville and Castle Donington. If the new schemes prove to be a success over the next six months, they may be staged more than once a month.

Sample menu for one lunch club session:

Served with roast potatoes and mixed vegetables

Or

Crispy chicken

Served with potato wedges and salad

Or

Tuna salad with coleslaw

Served with a jacket potato

*********************************
