Experts say bygone toys could make a comeback
Leading experts from Leicestershire believe that nostalgic British toys such as the iconic Action Man figure and Pippa Dolls the pocket money doll you could fit in your pocket!, could make a comeback to households all around the world and could provide a welcome alternative to the latest technological gadgets.
Anyone who was a child between the 60s and 80s will have played with a toy made by world famous British toy maker, Palitoy from Coalville in Leicestershire. From Action Man to Tiny Tears, Britain became famous for making dreams come true for millions of little children around the globe.
Coalville became a base camp for a miniature army of Action Men made by the Palitoy toy company. Action Man was the first British made action figure for boys. He started off as a military hero before branching out into the fields of sport, exploration and adventure! Between 1966 and 1984 Action Man was on the top of most little boys wish list.
The Palitoy company was responsible for introducing a number of the most famous and popular toys of the late 20th Century to children. These included Action Man, Tiny Tears, Pippa, Tressy, Star Wars figures and the Care Bears. The company was also best known for producing some of the Star Wars figures including non other than Luke Skywalker himself!
Based in Coalville in Leicestershire, the company grew out of a plastics firm established by Alfred Edward Pallett in 1909 and went on to become one of Britain's leading toy manufacturers until its ultimate closure in 1984.
Anyone wishing to take a nostalgic trip back to their childhood or indeed show their own children what the in thing of their time was, can come along to a Leicestershire museum to see the toys. Leicestershire County Council's Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville houses a vast collection of well known toys and games produced by Palitoy, some of which have been donated by the company's former employees.
Fiona Ure, Curator of Home and Life at Leicestershire County Council, said:
When you mention toy manufacturers, people usually associate them with being made in China, yet some of the most iconic toys from the 20th Century like Action Man and Star Wars figures were actually made right here in Britain.
Any child growing up in the mid to late 20th Century would have played with a Palitoy toy. Of course this was before the time of the Xbox and Playstation, but even now parents are re-introducing the joy of playing with traditional toys to their children as a welcome distraction from the ever growing technological gadgets available.
Dr Peter Marks, Director of Public Health for Leicestershire added that:
Many traditional toys, in addition to providing a lot of fun for children, also help them to be more active in their everyday lives with all the positive health benefits that can bring
Fiona will be leading a talk on the subject of Palitoy at Snibston Discovery Museum in Coalville, Leicestershire on Thursday 18th August at 10.30am-12pm. Tickets are 3.50. To book a place or for more information please call: 01530 278444 or visit: www.snibston.com
