Roald Dahl still a great hit with children decades after first book was published

Figures show that children across Leicestershire are still opting to read classic books written more than half a century ago by Roald Dahl, one of the worlds most famous childrens authors ever. The news comes as Britain prepares to celebrate Roald Dahl Day on Tuesday September 13th 2011 in honour of his birthday.

Everyones got a favourite be it James and the Giant Peach, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or the many more hugely popular books by the British author. In Leicestershire, Roald Dahl is the fourth most borrowed author for children aged 9-11 years.

Children in the county were busy reading over the summer and taking part in the Summer Reading Challenge which aimed to encourage children to read at least six books whilst on their school holidays. Below are the top 10 Dahl books children borrowed from Leicestershire County Councils Libraries Service last month in August:

The BFGThe enormous crocodile Fantastic Mr Fox Matilda / Roald Dahl James and the giant peach Charlie and the chocolate factory Danny the champion of the world The giraffe and the pelly and me Esio trot Charlie and the great glass elevator

The Summer Reading Challenge finishes tomorrow (September 10th) and early indications are that over 14,000 children more than ever before, took part in the challenge this year. Over 1,400 children joined their local library in Leicestershire especially to take part in the challenge.

The councils libraries in Coalville and Oadby are putting up a special display based on James and the Giant Peach and children visiting the libraries next Tuesday, can join in with activities such as quizzes, a wordsearch and character card making based on the famous book.

David Sprason, Leicestershire County Councils Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said:

Roald Dahls books are some of the most well known and famous books that children read and I am pleased that even after so long they are still extremely popular with Leicestershire children. Its difficult to decide on a favourite because they were all so good but I definitely enjoyed reading James and the Giant Peach, BFG and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The Summer Reading Challenge in Leicestershire has been a great success with early indications that numbers have exceeded previous years. I am pleased that so many children have joined the library on the back of the scheme and this just goes to show that reading is a great passion not just for adults but also for children.

Background information:

Roald Dahl was born in Wales on September 13th. He died on November 23rd 1990 at the age of 74.
