'Back the bid' campaign launched

Businesses and residents across the county are being urged to back a bid for up to 5 million to cut congestion, boost the local economy and reduce carbon.

Leicestershire County Council today revealed it is bidding for government cash to improve sustainable transport, primarily in and around Coalville and Loughborough.

This would include rolling out tried and tested projects such as:

  • Business grants to help increase sustainable travel e.g. the provision of cycle hubs, an updated carshare database, journey planner and cycle courses for employees,
  • 'Wheels to Work' - where young people are loaned scooters to go to work or training
  • The optimisation of traffic signals in Loughborough and Coalville to reduce congestion
  • walking and cycling network improvements e.g. new cycleways and improved signage
  • Promotion of sustainable forms of transport e.g. car sharing, travel phone apps, smarter ticketing, buses and trains
  • Personalised Travel Planning in the work place, in education and at home

The bid aims to build strong local economies and reduce carbon emissions and congestion by identifying alternative ways other than the car to travel locally to work. In addition, the bid will bring improved air quality and the health and fitness benefits associated with increased physical activity.

Businesses, employees and residents in the Coalville and Loughborough are being encouraged to back the bid by pledging support through the online form.

Specific suggestions from the business community for ways to encourage walking, cycling, car sharing and bus use are welcomed.

Similar schemes in Worcester, Darlington and Peterborough demonstrated that for every pound spent the benefit to the community was 4.5 times that invested.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Transport is a vital factor in our everyday lives and we're seizing the opportunity to make big improvements.

"Less congested roads, better delivery times and healthier staff offer benefits to businesses and householders but to maximise our chance of success, we need people to back the bid.

"Ultimately, better transport is not an end in itself but plays a big part in making sure that Leicestershire remains an attractive place to live, work and visit."

Jamie Smith (24) a mobile carer from the Loughborough area, uses the Wheels to Work scheme to help him do his job.

He said: Without Wheels to Work bike I would be stuck. As a mobile carer I need to get to lots of different places, sometimes to the other side of Leicester, throughout the day and this scheme enables me to do this.

It would be great if the bid was successful so Wheels to Work could be expanded. Its a brilliant way of enabling people to get to work quickly and easily without having to use a car.

Notes:

The bid will be made to the government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund and submitted in February 2012 - successful bids will be announced in the summer of 2012.

Further work to analyse the evidence underpinning the third Local Transport Plan for Leicestershire has identified Loughborough and Coalville as initial priority areas for transport investment. The LSTF bid will enhance and accelerate the delivery of improvements. Work continues to identify the next priority areas of Leicestershire, which will benefit from the bid by earlier introduction of similar measures.
