Coalville crossing encourages walking to school

A new zebra crossing in Coalville is helping hundreds of youngsters get to school more safely.

Leicestershire County Council has added the crossing at a busy junction close to King Edward VII Community College, Castle Rock High School and Broom Leys Primary School.

Designed to encourage pupils to walk to school, the boost follows a petition and will also help people reach local shops and a cemetery more easily on foot.

The 40,000 improvements were completed last month and included resurfacing the junction and installing a speed table to slow down motorists.

Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "It's good news that this crossing will make it easier and safer for so many pupils to cross this busy road, and that we've been able to respond to residents' concerns.

"Getting people walking or cycling rather than using their car helps cut congestion and carbon emissions and is better for our health."
