Pledge to "back the bid" online

Pledge to "back the bid" online
Businesses are signing up to back Leicestershire County Councils bid for 4.5m to help cut congestion in Loughborough and Coalville, boost the towns economies and reduce carbon emissions.
So far around 60 businesses have expressed support for the campaign but individuals, commuters and companies can still sign an online pledge to show their backing.
By visiting: www.leics.gov.uk/backthebid you can support the council in its "Choose how you move smarter travel for business" bid to promote sustainable travel in Loughborough, Coalville and surrounding rural areas.
Pledges will support the council in its application for the Government money which, if successful, will be used to roll out tried and tested projects such as:
- Business grants to help increase sustainable travel e.g. the provision of cycle hubs, an updated carshare database, journey planner and cycle courses for employees
- Wheels to Work - where young people are loaned scooters to go to work or training
- The optimisation of traffic signals in Loughborough and Coalville to reduce congestion
- Walking and cycling network improvements e.g. new cycleways and improved signage
- Promotion of sustainable forms of transport e.g. car sharing, travel phone apps, smarter ticketing, buses and trains
- Personalised Travel Planning in the work place, in education and at home
The bid aims to build strong local economies and reduce carbon emissions and congestion by identifying alternative ways other than the car to travel locally to work.
In addition, the bid will bring improved air quality and the health and fitness benefits associated with increased physical activity.
East Midlands Airport is one business that is backing the bid. Colleen Hempson, Surface Access Manager, said this was because: The airport is constantly striving to improve access to its site, to ensure that as many people as possible are able to access jobs here.
We also encourage employees to cycle, car share or use the bus, which reduces carbon emissions.
Lesley Pendleton, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for environment and transport, said: "Transport is a vital factor in our everyday lives and we're seizing the opportunity to make big improvements.
"Less congested roads, better delivery times and healthier staff offer benefits to businesses and householders but to maximise our chance of success - we need people to back the bid.
"Ultimately, better transport is not an end in itself but plays a big part in making sure that Leicestershire remains an attractive place to live, work and visit."
Specific suggestions from the business community for ways to encourage walking, cycling, car sharing and bus use are welcomed.
To find out more, please visit www.leics.gov.uk/backthebid or call 0116 305 0001.
Notes:
The bid will be made to the Government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund and submitted in February 2012 - successful bids will be announced in the summer of 2012.
Further work to analyse the evidence underpinning the third Local Transport Plan for Leicestershire has identified Loughborough and Coalville as initial priority areas for transport investment. The LSTF bid will enhance and accelerate the delivery of improvements. Work continues to identify the next priority areas of Leicestershire, which will benefit from the bid by earlier introduction of similar measures.
