Favourite green areas mapped online

New online maps have been launched to highlight more than 3,000 areas that people value across Leicestershire.

The maps were produced after more than 2,000 people told the county council about their most valued local green spaces.

County council leader David Parsons said: Im delighted that 2,000 people identified their favourite green spaces this is a real example of localism in action. Im particularly interested to see high levels of interest in protecting land in Loughboroughs Outwoods, Lubbesthorpe, Coalville and Whitwick.

Giving this data to local people will enable them to use it in neighbourhood planning and local campaigning.

I would urge councils and other agencies to take full account of the views expressed.

The highest responses covered areas proposed for housing, such as Whitwick Green, Outwoods, Lubbesthorpe and Brookfield Farm.

The most common land categories people wanted to protect were country parks and woodland; community green spaces, such as village greens; playing fields; open countryside; derelict land; and private land, such as golf courses.

Earlier this year, the county council asked the public to say which local green spaces they particularly valued and why. This was in response to Government proposals to create a new designation, to protect green areas of particular importance to local communities.

The Natural Environment White Paper suggests that local and neighbourhood plans will be able to designate land as local green space, to rule out development other than in very special circumstances.

Areas identified in an online survey and at 27 community forums have been plotted into a county-wide map and maps for each forum area. These will be available online from December 2nd.

For further details of the consultation, see http://www.leics.gov.uk/greenspaces - maps for each community forum area will be available at www.leicestershireforums.org

Media note: The online maps will be demonstrated to councillors between 2pm and 2.30pm on Wednesday (December 7th), before the full county council meeting. If you are interested in attending, please contact the press office on 0116 305 7046.
