Caterpillar supports transport funding bid

Caterpillar supports transport funding bid
Leicestershire County Council is preparing to submit a bid for 4.5m to improve sustainable travel in and around Loughborough and Coalville.
Around 70 businesses have pledged their support for the government cash which would be used to establish schemes designed to cut congestion in the towns, boost their economies and cut carbon.
The bid will be submitted next week (Friday, February 24) and one of the businesses that has expressed its support is Desford-based Caterpillar.
Should the council be successful, it will provide funding for a works bus for employees living in the Coalville, Whitwick and Ibstock areas to encourage them to ditch their cars and make it easier for them to commute.
A wheels to work initiative already used by Caterpillar that involves the loaning out of scooters to young people so they can get to work or training will also be expanded.
David Parsons, leader of Leicestershire County Council, said: With the amount of cars on our roads set to increase dramatically over the next few years, we are seizing the opportunity to look at alternative and more sustainable ways of travelling.
We would like to thank all the businesses, including Caterpillar, who have pledged their support for our Choose How You Move Smarter Travel for Business bid to help us make big improvements in this area.
Simon Collins, from Caterpillar, said: As one of the region's largest employers, and an organisation that is committed to making sustainable progress possible, we fully endorse this initiative by Leicestershire County Council.
Having recently announced a multi-million pound investment in our Desford facility, we are demonstrating a commitment to the region which includes support for a sustainable travel policy.
This initiative taken by the council is given our full support as part of our sustainability programme which seeks to minimise the impact of our growing employment base.
If successful, the money from the governments Local Sustainable Travel Fund (LSTF) will be put towards tried and tested schemes such as:
- The expansion of 'Wheels to Work' - where young people are loaned scooters to go to work or training
- Walking and cycling network improvements e.g. new cycle ways and improved signs
- The promotion of sustainable forms of transport e.g. car sharing, travel phone apps, smarter ticketing, buses and trains
A decision on schemes will be announced in May.

NOTES
The bid will be made to the government's Local Sustainable Transport Fund and submitted by February 24th 2012 - successful bids will be announced in May.
Further work to analyse the evidence underpinning the third Local Transport Plan for Leicestershire has identified Loughborough and Coalville as initial priority areas for transport investment.
The LSTF bid will enhance and accelerate the delivery of improvements. Work continues to identify the next priority areas of Leicestershire, which will benefit from the bid by earlier introduction of similar measures
